Safety in Cell PhonesMany users purchase cellular phones so they will feel safer, especially if their jobs take them into crime ridden urban areas. Ironically, the cellular telephones that are supposed to be keeping them safer may be, themselves, a hazard, according to some vocal critics. In 1993, the husband of a cancer victim charged that cellular telephone usage had caused the brain tumor that killed his wife.
The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association has pledged to spend $15 to $25 million to study the issue anew. But, in the meantime, they strongly maintain that research to date has shown overwhelmingly that the radio transmissions from cellular telephones pose no health risk.
Cellular conversations are carried by radio waves similar to those used for commercial television broadcasts, but with thousands of times less power. Their RF power levels are, in fact, similar to the power level emitted by a small flashlight.
The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements has set safety limits for localized occupational exposure at a level of 1.6 W/kg for 30 minutes' duration or more. A portable cellular telephone produces only 0.45 W/kg over the same duration. This is only about one third the level experienced by users of citizens band radios and one seventh the level experienced by the users of police radios.
Sid Deutsch, visiting professor of electrical engineering at the University of South Florida, points out that 17,500 Americans get brain cancer each year and that I in 50 Americans is a cellular telephone user. Thus, on average, we can expect that about 350 American cellular telephone users will develop brain cancer in any given year. Consequently, regardless of the findings of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, this controversy will likely simmer for a long time to come.
